International Womens Day 2023

In honour of International Women's Day 2023, Lyndsey Gregory, DRG Interior & Building Solutions' Group Operations Director, reflects on the company's commitment to People Development.

Lyndsey has been in the construction industry for 16 years and building DRG since 2011, along with her husband Dan. She particularly enjoys the challenge of helping teams to communicate better, evolve and grow. With that in mind, and bringing her Psychology degree into play, she has implemented processes such as psychometric assessments and profiling tools across the business to gain insights into each person's skillsets and communicative preferences and brought in business coaches to work with managers individually, as well as their teams in workshops to develop team dynamics. DRG is a family-owned business and is keen to understand and nurture individuals and team collaboration, we really feel that this is the way forward.

Whilst experiencing rapid growth over the past few years, the company has remained true to its core values of integrity, positive attitude, communication, focus & commitment and continuous improvement - always building and maintaining strong relationships with employees, clients and subcontractors with these in mind.  Our core values are the foundation upon which we build our company and develop our people.  They are integrated into the company's recruitment process, appraisal system; linked to training, development, and succession planning. We strongly believe that if we stay true to our core values then everything else can continue to be built from them and all our relationships, internal or external can be aligned through common values.

Lyndsey has a background spanning recruitment, account management, sales, finance, customer service and training.  She has an active and integral role in DRG – understanding how each team works by welcoming open conversations to understand how to keep improving on what we do as a company - whether this be with clients, on site or with our individual teams.

“The thing that gets me up in the morning is being able to take care of people.  If there's an issue, I want to find a solution for it through collaboration and asking questions.  I ultimately want to ensure people understand we are as invested in them as we hope they are in DRG. “

“One of my main focuses is creating a culture of progression and development, where employees can thrive. We are passionate about helping our employees develop themselves  and reach their potential through encouraging autonomy with support where needed and building mutual trust. DRG provides detailed individual career progression plans and encourages talent recognition through its monthly Stars Scheme. The winners of the scheme choose a charity to which DRG donates, further emphasising the company's commitment to making a positive impact. We also try to involve everyone in the vision for the business with regular updates and opportunities for ideas to be heard.

I enjoy strategic planning and have most recently put this into practice through working with our teams to diversify into general works.  I enjoy the difference in business models between DRG major works, general works and our sister company Simon Watts Joinery Ltd and I thrive on ensuring that we are hitting our quarterly targets to ensure our plans are put in to action. Everyone gets excited about being a part of this journey.

In addition, we prioritise mental health and wellbeing, and the importance of staff feeling happy, valued, and supported. I am a Mental Health First Aider along with several employees. We are also proud to be a company supporter of the Lighthouse Charity’s ‘Help Inside the Hard Hat’ campaign which raises awareness of and provides support in relation to looking after mental health.  We actively ensure all employees and subcontractors can easily access support when needed.  It’s important that no subject is taboo. Last year, we also implemented a menopause policy to provide resources and support for employees directly or indirectly affected by menopause and we encourage open communication between line managers and employees about any related issues.

I believe that leadership is all about giving people the space, tools, and support to grow without micromanaging.

I encourage accountability and can get fully behind the quote: 'A true leader unites people, doesn't divide them or find faults, but finds remedies.

I thoroughly enjoy being a woman in the construction industry and I am excited to see how we can continue to improve and grow while still staying true to our company aims and values.
